Women in indonesian society : access, empowerment and opportunity
The interest in women's studies has grown significantly in the last two decades Various national and international conferences have been held and publications released discussing a wide range of subjects related to women in the fields of religion, politics, economics, employment and culture. The United Nations' Fourth World Conference on women held in Beijing in September 1995 contributed significantly to women's movements throughout the world, as it produced "the Challenging Beijing Platform of Action. More or less one year before the Beijing Conference, an international conference on population and development had been held in Cairo, in which one of the main issues discussed was a woman's reproductive and health rights. These two international conferences have had an important impact on the Muslim perspective on these issues, as reflected in the publication of works such as Family and Gender among American Muslims by Barbara C. Aswad and Barbara Bilge and Infertility and Patriarchy by Marcia C. Inhom, as well as in Indonesian society's increased attention to women's rights in general.
