Islam & the west: dialogue of civilizations in search of a peaceful global order
This book presents the papers and other contributions of the International Seminar on "Islam and the West, One Year after September 11, 2001: Obstacles and Solutions in Search of a New World Civilization". The Seminar was organized by the Pusat Bahasa dan Budaya of the Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta and sponsored by the Indonesian-Netherlands Cooperation in Islamic Studies, Leiden University and the Konrad -Adenauer- Stiftung. The book signals a number of solutions to the main problems encountered in the relationship between the Islamic world and the West. The solutions are seen from the various perspectives of the people involved in the Seminar. One of the main topics addressed in the Seminar was the role of public opinion, mass-media and their manipulations in the public life. This book also covers the issues of "Islamism, Democracy and the 'Clash of Civilizations" and "the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict". In conclusion, this book proposes the need to have dialogue on all levels of society through which the existing tension and misperception between "Islam and the West" can be resolved in the atmosphere of openness and equality.
